This certainly depends on application but personally I enjoy working with fully manual lenses a lot more than with any AF lens and I would choose a good manual focus lens over an AF lens (almost) any time.They also hold their value much better than modern lenses. With some patience you can sell most manual lenses without a loss but with new lenses you can expect to lose 30% in the first year.

They can last a lot longer than modern lenses which are full of electronics and very complex designs, both of which make them more likely to fail.

Old lenses are usually beautifully built from nothing but metal and glass which makes it a joy to handle them.

Of course progress has happened in recent years but still affordable primes are often sharper than very expensive modern zooms.

There are 30-year-old primes with better image quality than many modern lenses.

You have a huge choice between thousands of lenses ranging from exotic ones with lots of “character” to some of the very best lenses available.

For the $1000 you would have to pay for that Zeiss you can buy an excellent set of five lenses from 20 to 300mm. For most applications such a lens will give you 90% of the performance of a $1000 Zeiss 1.8/55 FE.

They can be very cheap, you can get a great 1.4/50 lens for $50.

The 17-70mm doesn't have many direct equivalents from the camera manufacturers - the closest is the Pentax smc DA 17-70mm F4.0 AL (IF) SDM - and offers an interesting middle ground between upgrading to an extended range zoom such in the 16-85mm class, or a fast zoom like a 17-50mm F2.8. The Canon, Nikon and Sigma versions all feature built-in optical image stabilisation, to allow shooting at slower shutter speeds than usual without image degradation from camera shake. The lens use Sigma's 'Hypersonic Motor' for quiet autofocus, and is available to fit Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Sigma and Sony cameras. It also offers unusually close focusing to just 22cm (hence the word 'Macro' in the lens name). This offers advantages for both low light shooting, and getting blurred backgrounds when shooting subjects like portraits. Its F2.8-4 maximum aperture range means it gathers more light - twice as much at the long end, and 2/3 stop at wideangle.

It provides extra zoom range, being both slightly wider and usefully longer in the telephoto range. The latest 17-70mm offers some pretty clear advantages over the average 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 kit lens. Prior to this Sigma made the unstabilised 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 DC, a lens which was very highly regarded in its time. It's a successor to a near identically-named lens from December 2009, the Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM, but is smaller and lighter, uses revised optics, and has a new cosmetic design. It was announced at Photokina 2012, as the first lens in Sigma's new 'Contemporary' category of compact general-purpose zooms for everyday photography.
